New Hampshire’s oldest ski area is in good hands.
Erik Mogensen took over Black Mountain in October 2024, and in March 2026 he took full ownership. That makes Black privately owned and fully independent, run by people who live and work right here in the Valley.
This summer the family got bigger. Whitney’s Inn and the Shovel Handle Pub, right at the base of the mountain, now share the same ownership as the slopes. Ski all day, grab a pint at the Pub, and sleep a few steps from the lift.
Last winter was one for the books. We opened in mid-November, earlier than in any of our 91 seasons and ahead of every other ski area in New Hampshire. Closing day was May 17. That’s about seven months of skiing, and more operating days than the two seasons before it combined.

A STORIED PAST AND GENERATIONS OF STORIES STILL TO COME
Since 1935, Black Mountain has been at the forefront of community-focused, independent skiing. The mountain was one of the first in the country to offer lift support and is home to the first overhead lift, now known affectionately as the “J-Bar.” Generations of skiers have discovered their love and nurtured their passion for skiing and community down the slopes of Black Mountain.
Many consider this place “home,” nurturing its independent roots and storied past while staying focused on what we have always been—fiercely independent. We provide affordable and accessible quality skiing in a familial setting to our beloved community of locals, regulars, and visitors alike.
A SMALL MOUNTAIN WITH BIG THINGS GOING ON
Five lifts, from the Summit Double to the Fluffy Cow Handle Tow. A mid-mountain cabin pouring champagne and serving fondue.
Bands on the base stage every weekend, and a pub at the bottom of the hill with live music most nights. It all fits on one hill in Jackson, and this winter it’s all yours.
