Letter From the GM - Fire On The Mountain

As we move toward the end of March many mountains start to move toward closing day. Trail counts go down and complacency kicks in. The ski season helplessly becomes the victim of “unusually” warm weather. In the same breath that ski areas talk about closing for this season you are asked to shell out season pass money for next season.

We are not remotely thinking about closing day here at Black Mountain. Not only is 100% of our snowmaking terrain open, we will be relentless in making snow at every opportunity. In some spots, the Black Mountain Glacier is over 30 feet deep. We will do everything we can to push downhill and uphill skiing into May.

By the end of March, we will release a remarkable lineup of spring events spanning every weekend in April and May. Expect the sport and culture of skiing to be celebrated with races, pond skimming, culinary events, top-notch live music, festivals, and fireworks. This little mountain has built some serious momentum this season and it is nowhere near over.

As far as next year’s season passes, we are still working through what having a season pass at Black Mountain will look like next year. The incredible growth that this mountain has experienced requires us to remain very conscious about not only the amount of passes that we sell, but also the types. We are using all of our brain power to come up with some new concepts that we believe will keep the place vibrant but never overrun.

What I can tell you now is that Black Mountain will absolutely sell out of our main pass products. If you are not a current passholder, you must join the waitlist. That list is getting longer by the day. Current passholders will have the first opportunity to purchase next year’s pass, and do not need to join the waitlist. I will come back to you next week once we finalize pricing and the pass sale process.

But before then, this weekend is stacked with mid-winter fun. We are coming off an incredible snowmaking run where we absolutely hammered Maple Salom with every gun we could find. We will keep the massive snowmaking whales in place through the weekend meaning that the trail is going to offer a very unique skiing and riding experience. Additionally, we put significant time into building the base on our uphill route ensuring late season access to that important part of the culture at Black Mountain. Friday Night Lights will see a fresh route up and down, followed by the band Rose Alley jamming late in the base lodge.

Saturday, it is all about celebrating our season-long learning program, the Black Sheep. This bonus weekend party starts with me putting back on my ski school uniform and charging all over the mountain with these little rippers. At 1pm there will be a Black Sheep skimo race starting at the Sugar Shack then over the summit and down to the Alpine Cabin where we will have a DJ dance off. Awards, bouncy tent, and a potluck party at the base round off the day. If you are considering having your children join our popular Black Sheep program next year, you are welcome to join in at any point of the day and meet the current kids, parents, and coaches. We will be opening a limited number of additional spots for next season. Ski School is different at Black Mountain.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for the outpour of support our team has received after announcing that Black Mountain will become the headquarters of Entabeni Systems and the Indy Pass. We are extremely thankful that demand is high, our snow base is deep, the vibe all-time, and that we get to call this amazing mountain our new home.

Thanks for being here.

I really like how the post keeps the energy going even late in the season instead of slowing down like most places. It reminded me of a campus event I attended where we were planning activities, and I actually used keynote topics for students in Alberta to shape a small presentation for our group. That moment felt similar to how you are building excitement here, and it shows that strong planning can keep people engaged till the very end.

I’ve spent a few seasons at Black Mountain, and the team’s commitment to keeping trails open late is seriously impressive—late-season skiing here feels like getting an extra round in a 1v1 lol match when you thought it was over. The mix of events, music, and fresh snow really keeps the energy high, and it’s clear they put a ton of thought into pass sales so the mountain never feels overcrowded. Definitely a spot I’ll keep coming back to, even as other resorts start closing for the season.

I am overjoyed to introduce you to Space Waves. My love of science fiction and my desire to make something unique have come together in this game. I wish you the same delight on your journey that I had in creating it.
